Plans for a low income senior citizens housing project got a green light at Fresno City Hall

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno City Council cleared the way approving re-zoning plans for the project that will turn a vacant field into the site of a 40 unit senior citizens housing complex. It was proposed by Self Help Enterprises.

"And so those will be at an affordable income level that seniors can afford, we will also be offering onsite services, opportunities for the seniors to exercise on site, and have a sense of community, outdoor recreation space things of that nature," said Betsey McGovern Garcia, Self Help Enterprises.

Rent will be based on income, with residents paying no more than 30-percent of their income. In addition, the complex will be next to medical facilities.

"And we've got a partnership with Clinica Sierra Vista to provide health services on site, to help seniors age in place and help them remain in their apartments," said Garcia.

The complex will be located on Annadelle near Elm, across the street from West Fresno Middle School and the Mary Ella Brown Community Center.

In addition to senior housing, 20 houses to be will be built on the property.

"All of the single family homes will be developed through our self-help housing program where the families contribute 40 hours a week toward the construction of their homes," said Garcia.

Self Help Enterprises expects to start holding community meetings and getting the word out through community groups about the housing programs and where and how to apply in the next few months.
