Rally planned in Fresno in support of officers

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The nationwide anti-police sentiment and killings of police officers in Baton Rouge and Dallas have prompted yet another rally in Fresno.

Blackstone and Shaw are expected to once again be filled with people-- this time by those who are backing blue.

"It is going to be refreshing for police officers out there on the streets who sometimes feel all alone, especially right now," said Jerry Dyer, Fresno Police Chief.

The event, being shared on Facebook as the Thin Blue Line rally, is set for Saturday, July 30th from 5 to 8 p.m.

Dyer said event organizers are currently going through the permit process. They have already been told they must stay on sidewalks and have a peaceful event.

The rally is expected to be positive and not intended to put other groups or causes down.

"It doesn't mean the group coming together is against anyone else. Simply want to show their support of law enforcement," said Dyer.

Nationwide, as many officers are being confronted with angry citizens who are against police, locally, Dyer is seeing an outpouring of kindness and support.

"By and large in Fresno the vast majority of people have been so good to us and our police officers. Buying coffee for them at Starbucks, taking cookies to the briefing stations, bringing cases of Gatorade to headquarters."

But just in case any opposing groups with a different message shows up to the rally, officers will be prepared for any confrontation during the event.

Right now the police department is planning for crowds of anywhere from five to 600 people.

Many who plan to attend are family and friends of law enforcement officers.

Organizers said they plan to follow all rules set out by the city and police department.
