Left-hander Tyler Skaggs will start for the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, marking his first major league appearance since July 31, 2014.

Skaggs, 25, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014 and hasn't pitched in the major leagues since.

He has been dominant in nine starts in the minors this season, striking out 53 batters in 39 1/3 innings. He is 3-2 in those starts with a 1.60 ERA.

Drafted in the first round by the Angels in 2009 (40th overall), Skaggs is 8-11 with a 4.72 ERA in 31 starts for the team.

The Angels traded Skaggs to the Diamondbacks in 2010 in a deal that netted the team pitcher Dan Haren. In 2013 he was traded back to the Angels as part of a three-team swap that sent slugger Mark Trumbo to Arizona.

The Angels, at 45-54 entering Sunday's games, are in last place in the AL West.
