Avenal boxer Jose Ramirez defeats Manny Perez by unanimous decision

Avenal-native Jose Ramirez (17-0-0, 12 KO's) stayed undefeated Saturday night and won back the WBC Continental Americas Super Lightweight Title after defeating Manny Perez (25-12-1, 6 KO's).

Fighting in the undercard for Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas, Ramirez won by unanimous decision, 97-93, 98-92, 99-91, before a crowd of thousands of boxing fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Ramirez controlled much of his first 10-Round match with a methodical combination of jabs and punch combos while Perez relied on power punches to battle back.

"The gameplan was to use the jab, continue to stick that jab. Keeping my distance I'm a type of fighter who once I feel like I could do more and put more pressure, than I'll do so," he said after the fight. "I like to fight on inside. I like to hit the body. However, it seemed like I fought a very experienced fighter, who's very short and fought even lower."

"So it was so hard for me to reach in, I got headbutted about three times and it was being more cautious when I was going to the body. But, the jab and the right hand, keeping my distance from the outside. Hitting him and moving him, I was able to adjust and get his timing perfectly after the 6th round."

Early in the match, a flurry of punches from Ramirez opened up a cut on Perez's face which hampered him for the rest of the fight.
