Dogs Name Greenlee Starter In Season Opener
Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter named his starting quarterback for the season opener against Abilene Chrisitan.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The 'Dogs wrapped up their 24th practice of fall camp Wednesday afternoon.

And there was Greenlee throwing the ball to his backs and receivers, getting extra reps in after practice.

He's in his third year in this offense and the coaching staff said his experience combined with the least amount of turnovers, ended up being the deciding factor in what was otherwise a tight race for the starting job.

Greenlee beat out Chason Virgil, although the true freshman will get some playing time. DeRutyer told Action News it could be as early as the second quarter.

"That's obviously an important part of the game, anytime you turn the ball over, you're not having a good chance to win. So, that's one thing as a quarterback you've got to focus on. And it'll help your team win. I'm just ready to go after it, you know. This week leading up to the game, I'm just going to prep as hard as I can. Just go out there and try to help the team win. And that's all I'm worried about right now." said Greenlee.

"You go through all the stats, and most of the quarterbacks were really close in most of the stats. But the one we find the most important is who's taking care of the football. And Zack was clearly the leader in that. He only had two picks throughout camp. I think the next closest was eight. So, that was ultimately the deciding factor. He's been in our system. We expect that maturity. He's been in games and we just felt comfortable that he was going to be able to lead our team." added DeRuyter.
