Good Sports: High School Football State Semifinals
Four Central Section teams playing for chance to earn State Championship bid

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- For the first time ever, four Central Valley high school football teams will enter the state semifinals with undefeated records.

At 13-0, Mendota won the Division-5 Central Section title over Firebaugh and will play on the road against Amador.

"It's no secret, it's hard work. As long as we continue working hard, I think we will continue succeeding and these kids know we have high expectations for them and as a team," said Mendota head coach Beto Mejia.

In Selma, "Fear the Beard" has been the motto all year long. Head coach Matt Logue and his 13-0 Bears are Division-4 Central Section champs after defeating Chowchilla.

"Just a good group of kids. Very talented, really hard working, they've been playing together for a long time since they were little kids. Just one of those special groups," said Logue.

Strathmore, 13-0, defeated Sierra Pacific to earn the Division-6 section title and will put their perfect season on the line Saturday when they host Horizon Christian Academy.

"Big things are going to happen. We've been looking ahead and that football team that's coming to town, they are good but they're beatable," said Strathmore head coach Jeromy Blackwell.

Last but certainly not least, the 13-0 Division-2 champion Sanger Apaches beat Ridgeview and will host Serra high Saturday night in what may or may not be coach Chuck Shidan's last season on the sidelines.

"I don't have to announce my retirement. I get to coach another week. That's pretty good," said Shidan.
