Good Sports - Porterville water challenge

PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KFSN) -- On a given Friday in the fall, football is the main attraction in Porterville, but on this night what was happening outside the stadium took on added importance beyond tackles and touchdowns.

"We are having a water drive that started with Buchanan High School and I have to high school friends that have kids that go to buchanan, so I thought it would be fun for Porterville high to challenge them to try and match their donations," said Kathy Borman of the Porterville High 5th Quarter Club.

Porterville High parent Kathy Borman and two Buchanan High parents Corbin Souza and Julie Montgomery all graduated from Monache High School and thus the idea for a water challenge was born.

"It just made sense having been from Porterville, raised and went to high school here, didn't matter if it was Monache, Granite Hills, whatever school you went to it was just that it was going back to Porterville and helping out," said Souza.

Montgomery added, "East Porterville residents a lot of them have no water, their wells have run dry and they count on the donations from PACC to help them out, I don't know what the long term solution is but something has to be done."

According to the Porterville Water Challenge Facebook page, Porterville has more than 2,000 residents without water, but through the power of sports and social media, 500 cases of water and a $1,400 dollar check from Buchanan were donated.

"It's beautiful, I always tell my kids because you need to be involved in a sport because there is more to it than the physical activity. The team, the commitment, the hard work and the fact that these two teams can get together and and do this for these people is amazing," said Montgomery.
