Kings Canyon National Park visitors welcome winter fun

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A lot of the Sierra was under a winter storm warning Saturday, including Kings Canyon National Park.

The national park saw some rain and, for a short time Saturday afternoon, some snowfall. But as we found out there was more than enough for visitors to enjoy.

Nature lover Peggy Munson could just see the snow closer to her southern California home, but she prefers walking through Kings Canyon National Park where even in the winter the giant snow-capped Sequoias continue to attract visitors from hundreds of miles away. "Whenever I can get away and come up to somewhere beautiful like this," Munson said. "I'm spontaneity and let's go."

Spontaneity may have compelled Corcoran's Michael Rodriguez to do go sledding at one of the park's designated snow play areas. "My family, we love wildlife," Rodriguez said.

"So, we like to come out here and it is good to get out here cause nothing like this in Corcoran. So, you know, it's fun to get out here and have a big jump before we go home."

Park-goers bundled up and started fires as temperatures dropped below 30 degrees. Near the entrance of the park, there was even enough snow to do a little bit of snowboarding.

Of course, they could go other places for that, but then they'd be missing all of this.

If chain controls are in effect be sure to have them on before you enter the park, otherwise you're not going to be allowed inside.
