Trial for man accussed of kiling Merced toddler continues
22 year old Isaac Maldonado was in court Tuesday morning for allegedly hitting Dayveonna Polk with his car, and leaving her to die.

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- New details are emerging in the case of 22-year-old Isaac Maldonado, the suspect accused of killing 3-year-old Dayveonna Polk with his car.

The toddler's family was in the courtroom Tuesday morning as they saw Dayveonna's alleged killer for the first time in person.

Maldonado faces vehicular manslaughter, along with hit and run charges for allegedly killing the child earlier this month.

The police report says several witnesses say they saw the car quote" zooming by" before the girl was hit.

After collecting surveillance video, detectives were able to see that the suspect parked at this hair salon down the street from the accident just minutes before the deadly collision.

They say the suspect also called a hairdresser for a haircut using that cell phone number, police found the car was registered to a Livingston address.

They later discovered Maldonado and the car in question were at doctor's hospital in Modesto where investigators say the suspect's girlfriend was having a baby. They arrested him on site.

Dayveonna's mom, Shawan Bradford, says they recently laid Dayveonna to rest and she's taking it one day at a time.

Maldonado was in the court for just minutes, his arraignment was continued while he seeks to hire a private attorney.

As Dayveonna's family leaves the courthouse donning her face on their clothes, Bradford says they will be here until they get justice for the smiley 3-year-old they lost.

The report also says officers are still seeking evidence related to the car and that the suspect allegedly almost hit another person in the Grocery Outlet parking lot as he was leaving the scene.

He's due back in court on January 3rd.
