The sun is bearing down on the Valley, with many days of triple digit heat to come

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The sun is bearing down on the Valley with ferocity, driving temperatures above 100 for the seventh straight day. This time, way above 100.

"It's insane. It sucks. I hate it. I can't stand the heat. I'm melting," said one resident.

She'll be melting for a few more days too. Both our own Reuben Contreras and the National Weather Service are seeing a system that's not ready to leave.

"A lot of times we have these big ridges of high pressure that sit over us for long periods of time like we're having right now," said Kevin Durfee, NWS.

The National Weather Service recently started using a heat impact level map to track the danger posed by this heat. Basically, the darker the color, the higher the risk.

Durfee said, "In the Valley, here we have a few spots that are magenta and we do have a fair amount of reds-- and that's something to be really concerned about."

Out on the street, with temperatures reaching 100 before 1:00 p.m., people seemed to accept it's just part of living here.

"Does this feel unusually hot to you," asked our reporter.

"No, it's just California," said one resident.

"Yeah, it's too damn hot here. I'd rather go to Vegas," said another resident.

One resident said, "You kind of expect it every summer. It kind of came a little quicker this summer, but you expect it every summer."

Of course, the forecast calls for six more days above 100. So that'd be 13 in a row. But that's nowhere near a record-- in 2005, we had 21 straight days and just three years ago, we had 19 consecutive days above 100.

For the entire year, Friday was 2016's 27th day of triple digit temperatures. That is also nowhere near a record. In 1984, we had 63 and the average is 36.
