Triple digit temperatures come as hundreds of Clovis Unified seniors prepare to graduate

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- The class of 2016 is getting ready to take the stage in their caps and gowns as their loved ones cheer them on. Emotions are sure to run high at ceremonies and so are temperatures.

"This is supposed to be a fun time, but be aware it is going to be hot," said Denver Stairs, Clovis High School principal.

Stairs said they're taking extra precautions to make sure graduates only have to worry about not tripping on the way to grab their diploma.

School officials moved setup to after sunset, even moving dress rehearsal to a full 12 hours before the ceremony begins.

"Trying to get the kids out as fast as possible so that they're not sitting out here baking all day long. They're wearing nice polyester blankets as gowns so it's going to be a little warm today," said Stairs.

With temperatures expected to reach the triple digits medical experts urge people going outdoors to stay hydrated, seek shade, and protect yourself with sunscreen.

"We have medical staff under the bleachers, so if we have kids that get sick or something like that, we will transition them off the stage," said Stairs.

Should students get overwhelmed by the heat, water jugs are placed behind the bleachers for students to access. Ushers will be on hand throughout Lamonica Stadium should anyone in the audience need assistance.

"If they have some kind of sun shade they're more than welcome until the ceremony starts," said Stairs.

Gates for the ceremony open at 6:00 p.m. and graduation starts at 7:00 p.m.
