U.S. Coast Guard carves path through frozen Antarctic waters

The U.S. Coast Guard has been busy providing the National Science Foundation with logistical support in the Antarctic by carving through frozen waters.

Operation Deep Freeze is an annual venture that begins during the Antarctic summer. Starting in September active duty, National Guard and Reserve personnel from the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Army and Coast Guard join forces to assist in stabilizing the Antarctic region by providing tactical field support, aeromedical evacuation support, search and rescue response, sealift, among many other services.

This is one of the military's most difficult peacetime operations due to the harsh Antarctic climate.
