LOS ANGELES -- A man who posed as a veterinarian and operated on a woman's cat - who died - has been sentenced to Los Angeles County jail.

Prosecutors announced Thursday that Hector Menjivar received a 30-day jail sentence after pleading no contest to practicing veterinary medicine without a license. He also must perform community service and undergo animal cruelty counseling.

Prosecutors say Menjivar ran an unlicensed after-hours pet clinic in Van Nuys and charged a woman $300 to operate on her sick cat, which died the same night.

Authorities say he also examined a dog brought in by an undercover state investigator posing as a customer and prescribed pills for infection - although the dog was healthy.
