FRESNO, Calif. -- The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal-Fire) said they have suspended burning permits, campfires, and outdoor smoking at all government owned land in Madera, Mariposa and Merced counties.

The ban does not include incorporated cities and camp fires within maintained campgrounds.

The order also banned outdoor smoking. However, smoking is still allowed in vehicles, established campgrounds, rest stops, and parking areas cleared of vegetation. The order did allow for outdoor smoking within an area where at least 3 feet in diameter has been cleared of brush down to the soil.

Cal Fire said there is a high fire danger due to the dryness of vegetation.
