A traffic stop in Southwest Fresno yesterday led officers to a gang member who was in possession of a stolen handgun.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A traffic stop in Southwest Fresno yesterday led officers to a gang member who was in possession of a stolen handgun.

Fresno police say this man, 25-year-old Eric Johnson was driving in the area of Florence and Tulip avenues.

Authorities say during the traffic stop for a moving violation, Johnson threw a loaded 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun out of the window.

Officers were able to recover that weapon and thirty rounds of ammunition found inside the car.

Johnson was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on a number of firearm related charges.

So far this year the Southwest Policing District has recovered over 76 firearms while focusing on criminal street gangs and violence.
