Wind and snow will increase again later this morning. Snow will be heavy at times by this afternoon.
Colder air aloft will result in more showery precipitation over the Sierra.
Strong winds will continue along the crest with severe blowing and drifting snow and local whiteout conditions through mid day Sunday.
Snow will continue, heavy at times, today through Sunday morning.
Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 feet are likely above 7,000 feet through Sunday morning. Snow levels will be around 4,500 to 5,000 feet. The arrival of colder air later tonight will bring snow levels down to 3,500 to 4,000 feet by Sunday morning.
In addition to the snow strong southwest winds will affect the higher elevations until midday Sunday and create considerable blowing and drifting snow with local whiteout conditions.
Local wind gusts of 80 mph or higher will occur along the sierra crest through Sunday morning.
A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
Persons should curtail their travel plans through the weekend if their destination includes the mountains and national parks. Many roads leading into the higher elevations will either be closed or require chains during this time.
