Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

KFSN The United Way and the Internal Revenue Service are just two of the organizations teaming up to offer tax help to low income valley residents.

Organizers hope they can stop people from paying more than necessary to high-priced tax preparers.

Chris Schneider, Central California Legal Services: "There are a lot of low income folks going out to tax payer assisters who are charging them large amounts amount to do simple filings and often times the money that is intended for the low income community ends up in the pockets of tax preparers who are charging up to 50% of what people should be getting back."

The program is also designed to get more residents who are qualified to claim the earned income tax credit that's the federal program that allows low income people to pay less money on taxes.
