The victim, whose identity is being withheld, was air lifted to Memorial North in Modesto.
The suspects fled on foot on Cottage towards Santa Fe. The suspects are described as Asian males of undetermined age, wearing dark clothing.
"So far there is no indication why the shooting occurred," Deputy Rick Shukri said. No one at the scene is claiming gang involvement. The victim lives in Sacramento.
Merced County Sheriff's Detectives were called out for the investigation.
