State Lawmakers Investigate Beef Recall

California 2/25/2008 The recall involved more than 143-million pounds of meat from a Chino slaughterhouse. 50-million pounds of the meat was sent to schools across the country through a federal nutrition program, and 20 million pounds has already been eaten by children.

Valley Senator Dean Florez will hold a hearing in Sacramento today to find out how cattle found unfit for human consumption got into the food chain.

Meantime, the company responsible for the recall will probably shut down. The Wall Street Journal reports the Hallmark-Westland Meat Packing Company is running low on cash and the company's general manager doesn't expect to re-open.
