A suspected drunken driver ran a red light and struck a vehicle carrying a family of three in Carlsbad, injuring all parties involved The collision occurred at the intersection of Melrose Drive and Poinsettia Lane at around 6 p.m. Saturday, said Lt. Don Rawson of the Carlsbad Police Department.

A preliminary investigation shows the suspected drunken driver was heading south on Melrose when his or her vehicle ran a red light and hit the other vehicle, which was making a left-hand turn from Poinsettia onto northbound Melrose.

The driver struck the family's vehicle broadside, injuring all occupants in both vehicles, Rawson said.

The injuries were described as serious and one victim had to be life- flighted from the scene, Rawson said.
