Deadly Easter Accident

3/24/2008 Fresno, CA The family says the suspected drunk driver Stephen Watson tried to run from the scene but a relative ran after him. The 4-year-old child had been looking forward to the Easter egg hunt at his relatives' house when he was killed by a man police say was drunk.

Anthony Pico was about to turn his red Nissan Altima into a family members' driveway for Easter dinner when a drunk driver crashed into the back of his car, killing his only child. "The pick-up was traveling from behind didn't seem to see the vehicle slowing and was traveling at a high rated speed estimated at about 60 miles per hour," said Sergeant Craig Hinch with the C.H.P.

4-year-old Elias Anthony Pico was killed from the impact of the crash. California highway patrol officers carried the car seat that was carrying Pico away from the scene.

Elias' cousin, Victoria Cerpa says the driver of the pick up that crashed into her family's car fled the scene. "My brother, he's a security guard and he ran after him and he got the hand cuffs because he has handcuffs he put them on him and that's when the police came."

Cerpa said Elias was a joyful four-year old who was on his way to take part in a family Easter egg hunt. "He was a really nice kid he always playful and everything and he always liked to be outside he's a nature kid I guess he liked playing outside and everything."

Family members said people speed along this busy stretch of American Avenue all the time.

The other five people in the car with the boy were also injured and sent to Community Regional Medical Center.
