Horse Collapses After Race

5/5/2008 Kentucky Derby Animal rights activists are calling for the suspension of Gabriel Saez, saying the horse must have been injured during the race, and that he shouldn't have let her finish.

Trainer Larry Jones said that if the derby took place again tomorrow, he would put Saez back on one of his horses. While animal rights groups blame Eight Belles' jockey, others are blaming the sport.

"American breeding has become more and more of a speed-based dynamic. And it's become a little bit more inbred and inbred and they're breeding frailties and infirmities into the horses over and over," said ESPN Sports Columnist Pat Forde.

Eight Belles collapsed on the track Saturday with two broken ankles, a quarter of a mile after the finish line. She was euthanized on the track.
