ABC7 On Your Side: Save on travel

LOS ANGELES Fuel prices are soaring, along with airline fares. Now, some carriers are even charging passengers for luggage -- so it certainly pays to find ways to save money whenever you fly.

It's getting tougher to make ends meet these days, and ABC7 On Your Side is a campaign to help you save money. Watch Eyewitness News for money-saving tips and freebies to help stretch your dollar.

Web sites like Travelocity and Expedia do a good job finding cheaper airfares, but they don't search every airline for the best deals --including Southwest, the nation's biggest discount carrier.

That's where Web sites like Yapta come in. You register for free, download the Yapta Tracker, and it searches for the lowest prices on your desired flight. If the prices seem too high, Yapta will e-mail you when prices drop.

There are several Web sites that also search multiple travel sites for the best prices. At SideStep, you can even specify the site to search by the layover time on connecting flights.

Kayak also looks for the best deals on hundreds of travel sites, including online travel agencies and the airline's own Web sites.

ABC7 On Your Side searched for a best roundtrip from LAX to Honolulu leaving Aug. 1. The Web site Mobissomo found a $621 roundtrip fare on Delta through a site called Lessno. Kayak's price was $772 on the same Delta flights. On Delta's own Web site, the price was $611.

So as you can see, it pays to check several Web sites when you're searching for the cheapest flight -- including the airline's own site.
