A Day of Fun for Some Special Kids

A group of kids who have to think about very weighty issues got a day in the sun Saturday. Children's Hospital held a big picnic at Roeding Park for patients with chronic kidney disease, and their families. The kids got to work on art projects, or run an obstacle course, instead of worrying about getting dialysis.

The staff throws little parties like this a few times a year to bond with the patients, outside of the hospital environment.

Dr. Sahar Barayan, CHCC Pediatric Neurologist, says "It's a great time to get everybody together -- doctors, nurses, social workers, patients, and their families -- to all feel like we're one family. We all share the care and love for our patients."

Most of the kids get dialysis at least three times a week and they go to Children's Hospital for checkups about once a month.
