The C.H.P. said the driver of the Saturn was trying to pass a Toyota Sequoia when he saw he was driving into the path of an on-coming Corolla.
Officers said both drivers swerved to avoid a collision but crashed head-on. They both died.
The driver in the sequoia was not hurt, but one of his passengers suffered a minor injury.
