Police say two vehicles saw the truck approaching and tried to avoid it by driving into the highway's center divide.
The truck side-swiped one of the vehicles setting off a chain reaction.
One victim with serious injuries was taken to a hospital in Modesto. The others were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Merced.
