Fourth of July Celebrations Could Fizz Out

6/28/2008 Fresno, CA The governor and valley air district officials are asking residents to lay off the fireworks this Fourth of July. The air district claims the worst day of the year for air quality is the Fourth of July because of the smoke from fireworks.

The governor doesn't support a state-wide ban on fireworks, but he says each county should decide on a case-by-case basis.

Local firework vendors say a ban won't help. Thomas Weil, firework merchant, says "I think though that if you don't give people an alternative here especially after they're used to having fireworks in the state of California, they might seek fireworks somewhere else, outside the state and bring them in."

Vendors say high gas prices mean fewer people will travel for the fourth, so they're expecting to sell more fireworks. Air district officials say you're better off attending a firework show near home.
