A jury found Robert Thompson not guilty of murdering two girls back in 1986.

The decision today brought out a wave of emotion in the courtroom from people on both sides of the case.

Thompson was accused of killing 12-year-old Jodi Ragsdale and 15-year-old Sheila Carter. They were badly beaten and left on a rural Merced County road, but the case went cold until police found Carter's DNA on a car belonging to Thompson.

Thompson's first trial ended in a hung jury earlier this year and Merced County District Attorney Larry Morse chose to try it again, but the new jury of eight women and four men found him not guilty.
