Contaminated Water Blamed for Health Problems in Los Banos

7/17/2008 Los Banos, CA The Merced County Health Department said the Rafael Silva Family Housing Center is getting water from a well with higher levels of arsenic and copper than is acceptable by the state.

The county's housing authority is providing the migrant families with bottled water to drink and cook with. But Rosa Venegas said using the contaminated water to bathe has caused rashes on her legs, arms and neck.

A Merced County spokesperson says the water is safe for everything but consumption. The county health department is working on finding money to improve the center's water system.
