Harold Martens said he was working on his car just across the street from the pool when he heard a woman scream for his help. "I had to get the get the key to open up and then I saw the little boy and the man in the center in the bottom of the pool," said Martens.
Martens said he jumped in and grabbed the child but he couldn't get his grandfather out of the water. As emergency crews arrived with sirens blaring, Beverly Propes rushed to the pool see what was going on and ran into the victims' wife and grandmother. "She said I need to get home and change my clothes. And she wanted to get to the hospital to the grandson and that's where I took her, we followed the ambulance," said Propes.
Selma police say the young victim was swimming with both of his grandparents when his grandmother left briefly to grab some things from home. "She went three streets down, which is not very far to get something to eat and some water. And grandpa was at the bottom of the pool and grandson floating at the top," said Propes.
Propes says the 67 year old man was a good swimmer and his grandson was visiting from Oregon. Residents say Mc Call Village is a tight knit group of senior citizens. As they struggle with the tragedy that unfolded in their small community, they're praying for the victims' family. "It's a tragedy, should have never happened but it does," said Martens.
Because there were no witnesses, Selma police are investigating the drowning. However, at this point, they don't believe there was anything suspicious.
