Trophy Trout | San Joaquin River

Fresno, CA, USA The California Department of Fish Game is dropping about 3-thousand pounds of extra-large trout into the San Joaquin River.

The fish are known as "Trophy Trout" because they're specially grown to be big ... And to be shown off.

Those at the lake say the new trout make a great fishing day even better.

Steve Pauls, Fresno Resident: "It was just such a wonderful day. We didn't know they were planting the trout. We just came to enjoy the beautiful day."

This is the first of three weeks that fish and game officials will be planting the trophy trout.

Local anglers have been demanding larger fish for a while. So for the fourth year now, the San Joaquin Hatchery specially raised these fish to be released into lost Lake.

Officials say the trout average more than five pounds apiece.
