They said someone called police this morning to report a man lying motionless next to a tan colored van. When police arrived, they found the body of a man in his 40's who had been severely beaten.
At this point there are no suspects, and officers are still working to identify the victim. Detectives do know the name of the person the van is registered to, but they have not yet confirmed if the owner is the man who was found dead this morning.
Chief Richard Hawthorne said there is still a lot of work to be done in this investigation. Chief Hawthorne said detectives have been looking for footprints and tire tracks that could help lead them to a suspect or suspects.
The victim's body was taken to the Merced County Coroner's office just about an hour ago. Anyone with information in this case is being asked to call the Atwater Police Department.
