Flea Infestation Closes Fowler Classrooms

September 4, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
School officials in fowler believe a cat is responsible for a flea infestation that's shut down part of an elementary school. The fleas were found Tuesday inside one room at Marshall Elementary. The yellow tape went up across the entire northern wing after officials found more fleas in adjoining classrooms. 77 kindergarten and pre-school students have been relocated to other classrooms on campus.

"The fleas are in a very small isolated area so they're not allowed to spread. We do a lot of monitoring of the situation. We have flea traps so we can determine where exactly they are," said Assistant Superintendent Eric Cederquist.

Officials with the Fresno County Ag Department said fleas are not uncommon in rural areas. A cat trap has been set outside the northern wing.

The classrooms at Marshall will be closed for another 4 to 6 weeks until all the fleas are gone.
