Gas Shortage Driving Up Prices

9/28/2008 Fresno, CA, USA The shortage is mostly because of hurricanes Gustav and Ike, which hurt the oil refining capacity in the Gulf of Mexico.

Christie Hyde, AAA, says "Problems currently being experienced in the southeast are primarily areas that are being fed by one particular pipeline and there is fuel starting to run through that pipeline again."

AAA says the problem is already starting to correct itself and it should be completely fixed in a couple weeks.

Prices in the valley haven't been affected much. Sunday, AAA says drivers are paying an average of $3.76 a gallon for unleaded gas in Fresno. It's $3.75 a gallon in Merced, and $3.81 a gallon in Visalia. Those are all about 20 cents cheaper than the prices were before the hurricanes hit.
