Big Fresno Fair Final Preps

Fresno, CA, USA Most safety inspections have been completed. The main concern is just the massive amounts of people who will crowd the sidewalks. Fair organizers have reviewed their safety plans which includes everything from a very large police presence to checking all the carnival rides

Opening day is around the corner. Like always, more food inventions are coming from Chicken Charlie's. Tony Boghosian showed off, "New this year at the Fresno Fair ... deep fried span, it's delicious. Also, deep fried Pop Tarts." Before Boghosian and the other food vendors can operate, they must pass a detailed health inspection. Inspectors will also check all the carnival rides. This year, the Fresno fair has 50 rides, from roller coasters to a ferris wheel.

Thomas Amberson is with the California Fair Services Authority. Amberson said ride operators shoulder an every day duty, "I think it's important that the rides do get inspected... I think that it's important that the ride owners do their inspections as well, because they operate those rides every day. Nobody knows that equipment better than they do."

Like last year, Fresno Police plan to be deployed in large numbers. The fair spent a quarter of a million dollars to hire between 30 to 60 officers each night. Sergeant Mark Hudson said, "We want to maintain that visible presence. When people come to the fair, they are going to see an officer every five feet."

The stage is also set at the ABC 30 Event Center. If you're at the fair, you can stop to watch us broadcast. Plus, we will be showing you a lot of information about the transition to digital television next year and giving away free DTV converter boxes.
