Weekend Storm Moves Through Valley

10/4/2008 Fresno, CA, USA Ken Dodson, the Battalion Chief for the City of Tulare Fire Department, captured this photo of what appeared to be a funnel cloud west of the city.

The spectacular sight slowly dissipated, and there are no reports of touchdowns in the area.

The storm has also caused some brief road closures in the Sierra. Glacier Point Road and the Tioga Pass were both closed in anticipation of heavy snow, but both roads are back open at this time.

One of the hazards of the first rainfall following the summer months is power pole fires. One at Jensen near Cherry in southwest Fresno caused a road closure while crews replaced the pole.

Officials say dust that collects on the transformers and insulators during the summer months can cause electrical shorts once the dust gets wet.
