Always the teacher, the 76-year old Bowles, a former Pixley council member, spent a lifetime in the classroom. First working as an elementary teacher, then teaching Pixley's adult G.E.D.classes. Sadly, though, friends say her last teaching assignment was home schooling her grandson who had problems adjusting to regular school.
The pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Pixley says the Bowles boy came to church every Sunday and was very involved in the youth group...this violent act is something he says is very uncharacteristic of the good 12-year boy he knows. But other longtime friends say Bowles grandson has been suffering from emotional problems since he moved into her home with his father several years ago.
At "her" church-- Pixley United Brethren-- the pastor's wife says Shirley Bowles had a big heart and loved her family more than anything. Pastor's Wife Melody Bittick said: "She was a very loving person, she loved her grandchildren, she always talked about her grandchildren." Rambo said: I don't know what possessed him to do what he did because I'm sure he loved his grandmother."
Bowles' grandson is being held in juvenile detention. State law says he cannot be charged as an adult for homicide since he's younger than 14.
