Madera Woman Facing Deportation

Fresno, CA, USA A Madera woman set to be deported today may be allowed to stay in the country a while longer.

Lucila Huerta was preparing to meet with immigration officials in Bakersfield Wednesday morning. Huerta's attorneys had filed a request with immigration and customs enforcement, or "ICE" to delay her deportation so that she could take care of her sick husband.

Her attorneys told Action News that request has not been granted but an immigration official has assured them Huerta will not be deported today.

Huerta is married to a U.S. citizen, but is not eligible for a green card because she was caught entering the country illegally in 1999. She said she regrets that decision.

Lucila said the next time she is sent back to Mexico she will not be returning to the U.S. illegally.
