Congressman Radanovich's Anthrax Scare

Modesto, CA, USA The Modesto office of U.S. Rep. George Radanovich was evacuated Wednesday after the office received a package containing an envelope labeled "anthrax."

Some staffers are being taken to a hospital for cautionary examinations, said Spencer Pederson, the congressman's spokesman.

"They treat situations like this very seriously and take every precaution," Pederson said. "So until they confirm it's not anthrax they'll treat it like it is."

Local and federal authorities are investigating. Pederson said his understanding is that this package has been delivered to other congressional offices and the FBI is aware of the individual who sent it.

According to a receptionist, the office received a package addressed to Radanovich Wednesday morning that contained a sugar packet-sized envelope marked "anthrax."

Radanovich, a Republican, was in Fresno at a meeting when the package was opened by a longtime congressional staffer in Modesto, Pederson said.

Radanovich represents California's 19th Congressional District, which includes parts of Modesto and neighboring towns into the Sierra foothills, Madera County and parts of Fresno.
