Officials charged up over electric car plan

San Francisco, CA, USA The plan by the Palo Alto-based company, Better Place, aims to have charging stations in homes, businesses, parking lots and government buildings by 2012.

The project was announced today by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.

For their part, the mayors vow to help streamline local permitting and regulations to hasten the installation of hookups in the region. They also say they'll provide incentives for local businesses to install charging outlets for employees.

The deal will make the Bay Area the first region in the U.S. to create an electric car network.
