Suspicious Apartment Fire in Northwest Fresno

November 9, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
Fresno fire investigators are suspicious about what started a fire that forced five families out of their homes this afternoon. The flames climbed the two-story apartment building in northwest Fresno at Holt and Fairmont.

It started outside of the building, which is unusual, and it started moving up the building before firefighters got there to help. Chuck Tobias, Fresno Fire Department, says "It had already gotten a lot of the gas meters that were on the side of the building involved in fire as well, which fueled the fire, creating an additional hazard for firefighters."

Firefighters got to the top of the building and kept the flames from spreading any further. They limited most of the damage to the two homes on the top floor. But all five families living in the building are out of their homes tonight because there won't be any power until tomorrow.
