California tops Wisconsin in milk production

Fresno, CA, USA California cows produced 287 million gallons of milk in October, ahead of Wisconsin's 173 million gallons.

California's total was down slightly from October a year ago, even though the number of cows milked increased by 13,000. Agriculture officials say the drop in production is because dairy farmers cut their costs by feeding alfalfa with less protein in it.

Milk production in the 23 states with large dairy operations totaled 14.4 billion pounds in October, up 1.5 percent from October 2007.
