Big Lashes, little dollars

December 11, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
A seemingly small item, like mascara, is a multimillion -dollar product.Consumer reports had staffers try 16 mascaras to determine whether more money gets you longer, thicker lashes. They tested both expensive department store brands like Estee Lauder and cheaper ones like Maybelline.

Labels were covered so no one knew which mascara they were using. Which mascaras were not the panelists' top favorites? One of the most expensive, Christian Dior's $24-dollar Dior show. Also, Maybelline's top-selling great lash washable mascara.

So you won't need to dig too far into your purse the next time you buy mascara.

A mascara tube is an ideal place for bacteria to grow because it's a moist environment, so you want to get rid of a mascara after about three months. And don't share mascara with someone else.
