Investigators say Vera shot Melissa Lopez while they were at Vera's house in Dinuba.
They say Lopez was in town from San Leandro for the holidays. Action News spoke with both the victim's and suspect's families.
They did not want to appear on camera -- but say Vera worked at a local dairy and that he had been dating Lopez.
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the killing.
Lt. Kevin Cotton from the Tulare Co. Sheriff's Dept. said, "Investigators are contacting people that were there, family friends and just placing all the facts together so we can ultimately submit this case to the Tulare Co District Attorney's Office for a thorough review."
An autopsy revealed the victim died from one gunshot wound to her upper body. Armando Vera is expected to be arraigned on murder charges Wednesday.
