Will the Spirit Of Volunteerism Spread?

Fresno, CA, USA Nearly 4,000 volunteers answered the call to help and many of them are receiving their schedules and assignments on Wednesday.

Soon thousands will be concentrated in one neighborhood, working to build one lucky family a home. The hope is; this becomes contagious across the Central Valley.

Once the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition bus rolls into town, all eyes will be on Fresno. "It gives us another opportunity to show Fresno nationally," said Fresno City Councilman Blong Xiong.

Councilman Blong Xiong believes Fresno can serve as an example to the rest of the country of how to rely on each other in a harsh economy. "We are a community that's growing, that's building. Even in this tough time we know how to come together."

And they certainly have. Volunteer organizers said they are no longer in need of volunteers. Nearly 4,000 people have signed up to build a dream home and 1,200 hundred have already been scheduled.

So far the community has offered to donate most of the items needed for the build. Incoming Chamber of Commerce Chair Debbie Hunsaker said local restaurants and businesses that are volunteering their time and services may get a boost in return. "The production people and folks associated with the show will also bring economic impact."

And Hunsaker said wherever the home is located the entire Valley will benefit. "Our valley is pretty close knit. It could spill over into everything we have a lot to offer here."

In able to maximize the number of people involved on this project, volunteer coordinators have reduced the volunteer time from eight hours to four hours to include as many people as possible. Some volunteers will not be needed on the build site, but everyone is encouraged to support the project as a spectator.
