Fresno High Students Evacuated after Bomb Scare

Fresno, CA, USA Students at first couldn't believe what they heard.

Fresno High School Yessica Vejar said, "We just thought it was a test or something, but they said it was something explosive"

At 9:30 Monday morning, more than two thousand Fresno High students crowded onto the school's athletics field. Just an hour and a half later, parents like Jaime McCullough arrived at the campus. McCullough said, "I was like oh my god, what's going on. No contact. No nothing."

The Fresno Police bomb squad found the suspicious package in a bathroom. They eventually detonated it. Police Spokesperson Jeff Cardinale said, "It was made to look like a bomb. That I can say. The package did have tape around it. It did have wires protruding from it."

While parents are grateful no one suffered injuries, many expressed anger and fear. Gloria Cruz's child attends Fresno High. Cruz said, "I was scared. I just wanted to get here. To make sure everything was ok and get her out."

Cruz said by the time school ended at 12:30 PM, the district never officially notified her of the bomb scare. The district's spokesperson Susan Bedi said the delay was intentional, "We want to give accurate information and not rumors. We are working very closely with Fresno PD and the bomb squad."

Fresno High School classes will resume at their normal time Tuesday morning. The school district said surveillance cameras were recording near where they discovered the package. They plan to review the tapes to help make an arrest or suspend a student.
