Clovis Preparing For Cycling Event

Clovis, CA, USA In about three weeks, Lance Armstrong and a slew of other great bicyclists will ride through the Valley, with stops in Merced, Clovis, and Visalia.

The Amgen Tour is one of the biggest cycling events in the world. But, not everyone is quite ready for its arrival.

Three weeks before the world's second largest cycling tour arrives in Clovis, the city is scrambling. Hotels set to open by February 18th still aren't ready.

Clovis business development manager Shawn Miller said they will be and that prepping for such a big event does take time. "There's a lot of planning that goes into it. Everything from police and fire protection to the street fair operations."

Between fifty and one hundred thousand people are expected to pack the streets of Clovis for the Amgen Tour. A welcome challenge, people here say, they're ready for. "The whole town is excited. The whole city is excited I think. So, we're looking forward to it, all the people who will be here probably for the first time ever, and discover old town for the first time. It will be great for everybody."

Marty Watt owns 4th Street Antiques in Old Town Clovis. She, along with area business owners all met on Wednesday to discuss the big tour.

Watt said they're all on board to help bring some much needed attention and profit into the area. "Economy being bad, what it is our attitude here is everyday we open the door, there's an opportunity. So, you look for opportunities and you make the best of them."

City officials said the Amgen tour is the biggest opportunity to ever arrive in Clovis. An opportunity complete with a world-famous athlete. "They will come to watch this. It's a once in a lifetime deal. Lance Armstrong is using this race as his return to professional racing, so he'll be zooming through Clovis."
