AIDS Awareness

February 8, 2009 7:03:24 PM PST
A Fresno church offered free HIV tests Sunday as part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the disease within the African American community. While people celebrated mass inside Saints Rest Baptist Church with music and prayer, a white van was parked outside ready to offer free testing and information about the deadly disease.

Pastor Shane B. Scott told churchgoers that HIV is wiping out their community and anyone can get the disease. "Everybody who has HIV is not single and promiscuous. Everybody who has HIV and AIDS is young; everybody who has it is not old. Everybody can get HIV and Aids!"

Though African Americans only account for 12 percent of the U.S. population, they make up about 54 percent of all new HIV infections.

Sunday's event was part of national black HIV-AIDS Awareness Day... A nationwide effort to prevent the spread of the disease.
