Buchanan was Clovis Unified's first superintendent and he was famous for "doc-isms", like "we're too poor to buy cheap", meaning the district should invest more money in better products because they'll last longer.
And it was those types of ideals that helped mold what's become a nationally recognized school district.
"I hoped it'd be like this, but you never know. The average superintendent last 3.8 years in districts this size. And for me to have 31 gave me an opportunity to do all the things and to do them for kids and I think that was our secret." Said Buchanan.
Buchanan finished off his career as an educator by becoming a professor at Fresno State after he retired from Clovis Unified.
