Madera Section 8 Housing

Madera, CA, USA Some of the people who need government help arrived Wednesday afternoon at the Madera Fairgrounds. They waited all night long in the wet and cold.

Section 8 is only available to low income families and helps pay a portion of privately owned rental units. Back in 2006 is the last time the housing authority opened their waiting list. Once you combined that and the recession, the turnout was huge.

Only 725 families will be helped by Section 8 making the wait very important. "The way the housing is now a days. It's hard to get jobs and stuff and Section 8 will help us a lot. I will be able to get into a decent house," said Roger Gaither of Madera.

The people who waited got onto a waiting list, which is only the first step. The application must be screened and approval comes at a later time.

The housing authority will be accepting applications here at the fairgrounds until 3pm Thursday afternoon.
